Income inequality

Income inequality refers to the extent to which income is distributed in an uneven manner among a population. Hong Kong is the region which has the most serious economic inequality in Asia. Economic inequality is caused owing to the high living expenses, insufficient subsidies and low income. This creates Hong Kong residents to be more hostile towards the rich which leads to social unrest.

White elephant

”White elephant” refers to an investment whose cost of upkeep is not in line with how useful or valuable the item is. For instance, the Hong Kong-Shenzhen-Guangzhou Express Rail and Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge are examples of white elephant projects.

Subdivided flats

Subdivided flats are a ubiquitous kind of rental housing present in Hong Kong. They are flats which shown on the original approved plan of a building being subdivided into two or more individual rooms. Generally, the original non-structural partition walls are removed while the new ones are erected, new toilets and kitchens are installed, and internal drains are added or altered. These works can cause adverse impacts on the safety and hygiene condition of the building if not handled properly. Most subdivided flats are located in old residential buildings.

Ageing population

Ageing population is a phenomenon that occurs when the median age of a country or region increases due to rising life expectancy and/or declining fertility rates.

Although the government is putting up resources into solving the ageing population, on the other hand, they are facing more challenges to help the city’s poor as resources are more limited. The ageing population will also affect the economic growth of Hong Kong since there is less workforce in Hong Kong.
